Newsletter Issue 11, October 2011

From the Editor’s desk
Dear readers,

Welcome to the first edition of Future Learning Now!, Future Learning’s new chronicle! If you’re wondering what happened to our earlier FHDL newsletter, well, times change and we felt it was only appropriate that we have a revamped newsletter to reflect freshness and vibrancy.

Primarily, Future Learning Now! will highlight the spectrum of activities that give shape to Future Learning’s core principle – to transform lives through innovations in learning. Every issue will showcase the milestones we cross, the successes we achieve and the learning we imbibe while treading this path. Also, Future Learning Now! will serve the purpose of creating awareness both amongst all our stakeholders and the world outside, about what we do and more importantly, how we do it.

We are also making waves in the digital world. We have gone live with the new Future Learning website – www.futurelearning.in. The individual micro-sites for the LOBs will soon follow. Future Innoversity’s facebook page has crossed a fan base of 15000 in a period of 4 months. We also have a facebook page for Future Learning called WeAre FutureLearning.

Having said that, we’re still open towards what else Future Learning Now! should concern itself with. That’s where you come in. All readers are welcome to write in with their contributions, ideas and feedback to futurelearningnow@futurelearning.in. This newsletter is not your normal pdf, instead it is an engagement platform for you to connect with the editorial team and each other. Together, let’s make this a truly successful interactive platform.

From all of us in the editorial team – happy reading!

Future Sharp – dreaming big for young India
Seven million people, 1,680 multi-skill training centres and 140,000 entrepreneurs. That’s the vision behind Future Sharp Skills, a Future Learning company partnered by the government-backed National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). As part of the financial arrangement, NSDC will give a loan of Rs. 38 crore to Future Group and buy a 27% stake in the skill development unit, Future Sharp. The rest will come from the Future Group. The investment in the venture will total Rs. 58 crore. The goal – to train young Indians across a range of crafts and services including handloom weaving, carpentry and retail activities. In the next 10 years, this new venture’s training centres across India will recruit candidates, hone their skills and inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship. Our promise – to place 70 per cent of our trainees in appropriate industries.

Project Udaan – helping rural youth reach for the skies
For seven hundred-plus rural Indians living below the poverty line, it’s been a dream run since mid-July 2011. Under Project Udaan, an ambitious tie-up between Future Learning and the Ministry of Rural Development, these youngsters, sourced from across India, underwent a time-bound training and capacity building programme. Three weeks later, they received placements at big names from corporate India – Big Bazaar, McDonalds, Cafe Coffee Day, Pizza Hut, Vodafone, Bata, Aditya Birla Retail, Pantaloons and more. It’s only just begun…

All set to fly! Successful Udaan beneficiaries proudly display programme completion certificates and placement letters.

Manning Modern Retailing – Retail Association of India’s (RAI) annual event
Future Learning’s very first participation at the annual Retail Association of India (RAI) convention took off with a big bang. The theme of the convention: Retail Skill Development – Bridging the Demand Supply Gap. CEO Muralidhar Rao’s keynote address to delegates at a panel discussion on successful initiatives in skill development was well accepted.

With delegates from 102 retail enterprises in attendance, it was the perfect opportunity for an exchange of ideas and perspectives. Notable industry leaders who addressed the delegates were Bijay Sahoo (President, Reliance Retail), Sadashiv Nayak (Joint CEO, Future Value Retail), Jamshed Daboo (CEO, Trent Hypermarket), T.V.Jayaraman (CEO, Everonn Skill Development) and Seema Arora Nambiar (Director – People Resources, Hardcastle Restaurants).
